Custom Miter Saw Station
At MKLC Woodworks, functionality meets craftsmanship—and this custom-built miter saw station is a perfect example of that philosophy. Designed to maximize workflow, storage, and dust control in a small footprint, this build has become the heart of my shop.
The Vision
I wanted a miter station that not only housed my Festool Kapex saw, but also gave me:
Long material support on both sides
Precision fences for repeatable cuts
Integrated dust collection
Ample drawer storage for hand tools and accessories
Mobility when needed, with a rock-solid base when stationary
The Build
1. Base Platform:
The entire station sits on a painted plywood base with locking casters, giving me the flexibility to move it when needed. The base was built first to ensure a level foundation and support the weight of the drawers and saw.
2. Cabinet Design:
The cabinet includes:
Left and Right Modules: Each side features a Craftsman drawer unit for organized storage—clearly labeled for things like layout tools, router accessories, and sanding gear.
Center Module: A Husky drawer unit fits perfectly beneath the Kapex, storing blades, clamps, and jigs.
Side Cabinets: On each end, I added custom plywood enclosures to balance the aesthetic and provide additional enclosed storage.
3. Top & Fences:
I built a wide worktop using a durable, low-friction surface material, with the Kapex recessed perfectly in the center. I installed custom aluminum T-track fences on both sides, which include flip stops for precise repeat cuts. Everything is flush for seamless material movement across the surface.
4. Dust Collection:
Dust control is critical. I integrated a dual-hose setup:
One hose connects to the back port of the Kapex.
Another hose captures dust from the base and below the saw.
Both are routed overhead and tied into my main dust collection system.
5. Wood Storage Above:
To save space, I installed a simple but strong wall-mounted lumber rack above the station. It keeps hardwood and sheet goods organized and easy to access without taking up valuable floor space.
The Results
This miter station has made a huge difference in my workflow. Whether I'm rough-cutting lumber or making repeatable finish cuts, everything is right where I need it—organized, dust-free, and efficient.
